Centennial Dam Watchdog Activist Summit
On the evening of Monday, March 13, SYRCL brought together a panel of speakers chosen for their expertise in law, hydrology, ecology, water politics, community activism, and local history. Speakers provided information about the scope and cost of the Centennial Dam project, the risks associated with building the dam, sustainable alternatives, and how community members can take action to challenge this contested proposal.
The Activist Summit addressed what is at stake from an environmental, community, and cultural perspective so that citizens are informed to participate, engage, and hold the Nevada Irrigation District (NID) accountable. Audience members learned how local groups are closely following the permitting process and watchdogging NID’s attempts to gain ownership of land publicly held by the Bureau of Land Management.
Attendees had opportunities to ask questions following the 90-minute discussion. Speakers included Caleb Dardick, SYRCL Executive Director; Rachel Hutchinson, SYRCL River Science Director; Shelly Covert, Nevada City Rancheria Tribal Council Secretary; Isaac Silverman, Sierra Watch Staff Attorney and SYRCL Board member; Sierra Streams Institute Wildlife Biologist and Project Manager, Kristen Hein Strohm; and Otis Wollan, American River Watershed Institute President.
This event was made possible by the generous sponsorship of Denis Kutch, of the Nevada Theatre Commission, and Terry and Karen Brown. Learn more and take action at: www.damwatchdog.org
